What everything does
Every tool in ReadBridge, grouped by when you would reach for it, with the steps to
use each one.
A key is only needed for some of this. Anything marked
needs AI key uses Google; everything else works with nothing set up at
all, including offline. See Help if an AI feature is not responding.
Before reading
setting the text up
Getting a passage in, and priming the student before they read a word of it.
Bring in a passage
Any text at all — typed, pasted, or photographed from a book.
- Paste text into the box on the home page, or press Choose a PDF or photo.
- Press Read this text.
Photographing a page from a workbook is often quicker than typing it, and
is the most common way teachers get a passage in. needs AI key for
PDFs and photos only; pasted text needs nothing.
Save a text for later optional
Keeps a passage, its grade level, the patterns it is for, and its questions.
- Press + New Text on the home page.
- Give it a title, paste or generate the passage, set the grade.
- Press Save Text. It appears under Your Texts.
Pre-reading: structure and background needs AI key
Names how the text is built, and finds out what the student already knows.
- After pressing Read this text, the pre-reading screen appears on its own.
- Text structure fills in by itself — the type of text, what to listen for, and
signal words to watch for.
- Ask the student the Background Knowledge question and tap their answer: a lot, a
little, or never heard of it.
- Read them the short primer it writes, then press Start Reading.
Home language. Pick a language from the dropdown on this screen and the
primer, and every word-tap tool afterwards, adds a translation underneath the English.
Reading the text
during the passage
Everything on the bar above the passage.
Read to Me needs AI key
Reads the passage aloud and highlights each word as it is spoken.
- Press ▶ Read to Me.
- Use Pause or Stop at any point.
Following the highlight while hearing the word is the point — it ties the sound
to the print rather than replacing the reading.
Simplify needs AI key
Rewrites the passage at an easier reading level, keeping the content.
- Press 🧠 Simplify.
- Press it again to switch back to the original.
Useful when the content is right for the student but the sentences are not.
Alternating reading
Splits the passage into turns, teacher and student trading sentences.
- Press 🎭 Alternating.
- Choose whose turn comes first and how the turns divide.
- Work through it — a banner shows whose turn it is.
Reading Tools
How the page looks: overlay, spacing, focus, font, and printing.
- Press ⚙️ Reading Tools on the right of the bar.
- Colour overlay — a yellow, blue, pink or green tint over the page.
- Line focus — dims every line but the one being read.
- Line and letter spacing — more space helps some readers track.
- A− and A+ on the bar change text size.
- Print this passage gives a clean copy at whatever settings you chose.
Print is the one to remember. The printed page comes out at the same font,
size and spacing on screen, so what worked in the session goes home with them.
Any single word
when a student gets stuck
Tap any word in the passage to open four ways into it. All four
need AI key.
💡 What does it mean?
A student-level definition, an example sentence, and a quick check.
- Tap the word, then press What does it mean?
- Read the definition and example together.
- Have the student pick the right meaning from the three choices.
🔍 Context clues
Teaches the strategy rather than handing over the answer.
- Tap the word, then press Context clues.
- It names the type of clue and quotes the words that give it away.
- Ask the student what they think it means before revealing the meaning.
🔤 Syllabication
Splits the word the way you would teach it, labelling each syllable type.
- Tap the word, then press Syllabication.
- Read the parts left to right, then blend them back together.
🧬 Morphology
The whole word, three ways: sounds and spellings, syllables, and word parts.
- Tap the word, then press Morphology.
- Sounds & spellings — every grapheme with the sound it spells.
- Syllables — the split, with each syllable type named.
- Word parts — prefix, base and suffix, and what each one means.
- Meaning & family — the base word and related words built from it.
This is the deepest of the four. It is worth opening on a word the student will
meet again in other forms.
Word study decks
no passage needed
Concept-first practice, reached from the home page. None of this needs a key,
or an internet connection.
🗂️ Sound Wall & Card Decks
152 grapheme cards across 15 decks — browse them, or drill on the big screen.
- Press Open on Sound Wall & Card Decks.
- Pick a deck to browse the cards.
- Press Start drill to put one card at a time on screen, large.
- Tap to reveal, arrow through, or shuffle.
🔡 Nonsense Word Study

172 rime sets.
- Press Open on Nonsense Word Study.
- Choose rime sets, or press Match the concepts I've taught.
- Pick how many words — 5 to 10 is a lesson.
- The student reads each word, then spells it back.
Why nonsense words. A real word can be recognised by shape or guessed from
its first letter. A nonsense word cannot, so the student has to track every grapheme.
🌱 Morpheme Deck
127 cards — prefixes, suffixes, and Latin and Greek bases, with meanings.
- Press Open on Morpheme Deck.
- Choose prefixes, suffixes, Latin bases or Greek bases.
- Browse, or drill — show the morpheme and ask its meaning, or the reverse.
🧩 Syllable Division Patterns
Eight patterns with 50 words to drill on.
- Press Open on Syllable Division Patterns.
- Read the order of operations in the green box first — it applies to any long word.
- Tap individual pattern cards to drill only those, or Start drill for all eight.
Checking understanding
after the passage
❓ Comprehension check needs AI key
Five questions on the passage, aligned to the reading standards and labelled by
the skill each one tests.
- With the passage open, press ❓ Questions.
- Each question shows its standard — literal, inferential, author's purpose and so on.
- Press the speaker beside any question or answer to have it read aloud.
- Read All Questions reads the whole set.
The labels matter as much as the questions: they show which kind of thinking a
student is finding hard, not just whether they got it right.
Records & assessment
evidence for the file
Nothing here needs a key. Everything stays on the device.
🏃 Running Record
A timed oral reading, marked live, scored automatically.
- Press 🏃 Running Record on the home page.
- Choose a saved passage or paste one, and add a student label if you want one.

- You get words correct per minute, accuracy, and a miscue breakdown. Export it as a
file, or Save it to the records.
The student label is optional and free text. Initials or a class period
are enough — it never leaves the device either way.

- Open any record to see the detail again.
Session record
Logs what a student needed during a lesson, then hands you a file for it.

- Teach as normal — every word tapped and every tool used is logged.
- Press Finish session and download the summary.
This is the one that writes your intervention notes for you. Start it before the
lesson, not after.
Lesson Procedures
the whole lesson, in order
The lesson framework in running order, with a way into the tool for each step.
📋 Lesson Procedures
Each step's procedure to read mid-lesson, and a button into the ReadBridge tool
for it.
- Press Open on Lesson Procedures.
- Tap a step to read its procedure; tap the box to tick it off.
- Steps with a ▶ open the tool for that part of the lesson.
- A chip in the corner brings you back to where you were.
Progress is kept on the device until you reset it, so leaving for a drill and
coming back does not lose your place.
